The dungeon that the Carapacelings had taken over was a large cave system that ran through a small mountain west of Nadoraya. Given its distance from Nardostok and the relative wilderness that surrounded it, it was not managed by the guild as most of the dungeons near Faebrook were. Instead, it was simply marked by a pair of large iron doors in the north face of the mountain that stood slightly ajar, evidence of the continued comings and goings of its insect-like inhabitants.
Acting as the scout for the party, Rowan went ahead to check if any insects were standing guard. There was one, its mandibles clicking slightly as it sat by a fire by the entrance. Getting his first actual look at the enemies they were about to face, Rowan could spot a few differences between what lay before him and what he had studied in his textbooks.
The Carapaceling was indeed short, looking to be about two feet tall while sitting, and probably four feet at most standing up. Its face was human-like, but covered in dark green chitin instead of skin, with two large mandibles that grew from its mouth, and a pair of enormous compound eyes not unlike those of a fly. On its body, it wore robes that looked like a sturdier version of silk, perhaps made by the Carapacelings themselves.
Only one arm was visible, but it was a strange sight. Rather than an insectâs claw or a humanoid arm, it had something that resembled a fusion of both. A long, black, stick-like appendage sprouted from its robe and culminated in a three-fingered âhandâ that stirred the fire in front of it.
No other enemies could be seen, but Rowan did not return, instead settling in to make sure that none were hiding nearby.
A cold and miserable twenty minutes later, he had seen exactly as many insects as he had when heâd arrived at the dungeon. Not willing to rest in a cold snowbank for even a second longer, he returned to report his findings to the party.
âI always wondered how you were such a good scout,â Dugan commented lightly after Rowanâs debriefing was finished. âBut with your background, I guess it makes sense.â
Still wringing the water from his socks, Rowanâs only answer was a middle finger which Dugan received with a chuckle. Ignoring these antics, the rest of the party talked strategy, and it was soon decided that they would wait no longer. The time to strike was now.
With only one enemy visible, there was no need for complex plans. Morgana dispatched the unfortunate sentry with a stone spear that penetrated its chitin and blew its brains out, Rowan secured the door and verified that no more enemies lay just beyond, and then they were in.
The inside of the dungeon bore some resemblance to the many other dungeons that Rowan had entered in that it was an underground area filled with mana and monsters. That was where the resemblance ended, however, for the Carapacelings had truly made this dungeon their own.
